Both have much better mass transit in their cities and both have developed extensive hi speed rail systems. We are at least 25 years behind them in this regards.

We're not behind. We just make different choices.

Mass transit may be perfect for you and you should use it. But I wouldn't live anywhere where mass transit is a better option than driving my own car or motorcycle.

The reason we don't have much mass transit is because people f*cking don't want it. We like our cars, our privacy, our personal freedom, and we're not willing to give it up to save a few dollars worth of gas.

I took AMTRAK to NOLA last week; trains here are not like they are in the NE or where you live. They are absolute luxury. And dirt cheap. But that simply doesn't offset the inconvenience of having to deal with train stations, people, cabs, waiting, etc.

Those who want it ought to go for it. I think mass transit is pretty much for pussies.
