Alcohol is a drug as far as I am concerned. If Dale does not have any family with significant substance abuse problems he has very uncommon good fortune. Your Dad becoming a alcoholic "because" of WWII is a good target. But in reality IMO people who become substance abusers generally were going to do it anyway. I see enough of it from managing people over the years and through dealing with extended family. Some people always have a reason to drink or abuse substances. The country is full of examples of people who have destructive coping mechanisms who have never been in combat.
