If you are naturally happy, and balanced, and need no drugs- be grateful. You are lucky. You won a biological lottery, nothing more.

I completely agree with this statement.
And I know you don't mean that not winning the lottery provides an excuse for negative behaviors, anymore than the real lottery loser would be justified in going out and stealing his groceries. It just means the non-winner has to struggle harder to stay afloat.

I will never, ever be arrogant enough to think that I am stronger, better, or wiser than anyone else. I was just born happy and went through life that way. But, (as you well know, since you lived through it with me :), menopause sent me into a serious tailspin, and it was drugs and some counseling that got me back to my old self.

I can only imagine the loneliness of true mental illness, or the psychic pain of a combat-stressed vet reentering a world that has no idea what he's been through and wants only for things to be 'back to normal'.
