Depends on what you call old. I noticed the percents of total diagnoses were pretty close for each ten year age grouping from 45 on up.

Re the 35-45 age group, clearly the diagnoses would higher in the 35-40 age group than in the 35-40 age group. I assumed a linear increase.

the book has a chapter on health care that should be read by anyone who believes we have a great health care system.

I think we do .... but a statement like that is a comparative one. If we don't, who does?

BTW I only think about this at spare moments but ... about that wash and the two 15%'s you mentioned:

We can find that somewhere around 15% of diagnoses occur in the forties. (We don't know how many of those were found via mammogram.) And that 15.1% of deaths occur between 45 and 55, which would be the age range that determines survival for a 40 something diagnosis. Even allowing that some of those deaths could be women diagnosed younger than forty and just over 50, that's pretty much a WASH.

Of course the set of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer is different and bigger than the set of women who die of breast cancer. At any rate, this has nothing to say about the comparison of US and European cancer deaths.
