Wharf,

even if he is right about staying in Afghanistan to rebuild that country, it won't make any difference. For $300B, of course we can rebuild that country. But who cares? The US is crumbling under the weight of our debt and deficits. We can't afford to help them.

You only need 100K troops on the ground in order to buy the time to nation build. That is what this is about. If Obama had narrowly focused our efforts on killing Al Qaeda, then all we would have needed are special forces, drones, and fighter jets. That I would have supported, because that is in US best interests. A viable Afghanistan does nothing for US interests. Sorry, I take that back. It actually worsens US interests, because we'll be $300B more in debt with no return on investment back to the US.

The Climate Change bill passed in the House had a price tag of $150B. We could have passed a bill twice as aggressive for the amount we are about to spend in Afghanistan.

What in hell is wrong with us? Why can't any of our leaders do these cost benefit calculations? Are all of them mathematically challenged? Or are they just plain stupid?
