While it's true that people in 12 step programs fail a lot, that is also true of every other treatment modality for drug addicts and alcoholics. As for the "religious commitment" idea, that's really a misconception. There is no religious commitment necessary for AA, NA, or any of the other 12 step programs. They are spiritual programs, not religious. There are plenty of agnostics and atheists in all of them.
