My Dad used to call the Bitterroot Valley the "banana belt" because the climate there was milder than the Missoula valley. It was milder enough that people tried to establish commercial fruit orchards there similar to the Flathead Valley, but they all failed. I learned in Forestry School that the reason for the failure was the soil had too much iron in it for the orchards to thrive.

Flathead Valley's orchards do well because the lake is large enough to stabilize the climate. A few years ago there was a big freeze and many of them suffered.

They are back in business now, but I think this year was a poor one for them.
