When I was younger I read a lot of historical novels. if the person does the research, it is a very fun way to both learn the history and get into the story. I still remember reading about Philip I when I was visiting Alabama at 14. :)

My mother has several historical novels on Russia, and on early Euro times, mostly British. I think some of you here discussed the ... wives of Henry the VIII... Boleyn women?

The Kitchen Boy for russian times of the early 19th centery is a good read to me.
