Paul,

Regarding the IBM NC computer announced yesterday, at 1st glance it seems quite silly since as you noted you could buy a $1000 computer. What IBM is aiming for is reduced cost of operation. Some studies estimate a cost of $12,000 a year in related support costs for a corporate PC, if IBM can centralize the software and services in a remote location via use of an NC computer then it may start making economic sense. The NC computer doesn't have "extras" since it doesn't need them, except for monitor of course ! Think of it as a modern 3270 terminal which was nothing but a monitor and keyboard and is still in use at certain locations.

Regards, Maurice
