One of the serious issues facing the world is the reliability of OPEC's oil reserve estimate. In the 1980s, OPEC decided to set export quotas based on the oil reserves of its member countries. The larger your oil reserve, the larger your export quota. Funny enough, just at this time many countries in OPEC adjusted their oil reserve estimates higher. Just a coincidence? Because OPEC's member countries have nationalized oil companies, their oil reserve estimates are state secrets, so OPEC is not talking. Here are 2 graphs showing these revisions:
