I saw a documentary recently on the PBS show "Afro Pop." It was on welterweight, Joshua Clottey from Bukom, Ghana. I am not a boxing fan, but I was intrigued with the film. I was particularly interested in how much his poverty-stricken home town rose and fell on his fortunes. It also showed how his fame ruined his relationship with his hometown fiancee. She became mistrustful of him about women and gambling - traits he picked up because of the "How You Gonna Keep Them Down on the Farm After They've Seen Paris?" syndrome. Another trait showed itself in him which I thought was at best tacky: He had come into a place where many of his young male friends were sitting around. He handed out hundred dollar bills to each of them in full view of all (not to mention in front of the camera already in the room to record it) instead of doing that in private. That was a lot of money and a real blessing for each, considering that local fishermen made $300 a year.

How hard money and fame can actually be on people.
