Fair enough. So define "hard left liberal". Kate used it as a pejorative; let's just hang someone as far out on the left as we can, and then walk away from the label. Ask her to define it. I offered a sort of a bit of a minuscule look at what it might mean by pointing you to Sam Bowles body of work. Good work; interesting work; not particularly ideological in the narrower sense I've been using the word; but definitely to the left of Krugman, at least so far as economics goes.
