I had an easier time defining victory in Iraq. What we needed back then was to see a relatively stable government, which would be not too anti-American, not islamist, anti-al Qaeda, more or less accepted by the population, and relatively freely elected. By this definition, Iraq was a victory.

Afghanistan is harder to define. It is amorphous, and the population seems too xenophobic. It seems they'd rather suffer under their own brutal rulers than trust anyone who's a foreigner. I hope I'm wrong, but it appears that no matter what we do, in the end they'll revert to their traditional ways very quickly.
