Mark,
>I am reminded of an Irish youth who confided to me in Netherlands that 'once the European Union was completed, they'd kick America's but!'. <

I have traveled in almost forty countries (unrelated to my employment) and am I voracious reader. Here's my observation:
America is now way ahead in computer technology. But the Europeans can catch up fast because of the rapid technology change. Their socialistic mind set will also change with pressure from American competion in this area.
They won't have to "kick our butt." America is doing it to itself with its education. Rating what children learn, academically and vocationally, on a scale of 1-10, I rank Europe 7 to 10. The USA 1 to 2. (I am including teaching/molding of minds before birth.)
Right now America connot even figure out how to fix it's system, much less improve it . Its debate on this subject has reached a state of a comical farce.
This will have a dramatic long term effects.
Ami
