Does there have to be anything "in it" for us?
Man, there is always something in it for us. If not financial, it is political. I am not talking here about as American people, I am talking about our government.

What's in it for us when we send our military forces on humanitarian rescue missions?
You need to differentiate between humanitarian and military.

What in it for the police when they receive a 911 call from you and you're asking them to respond to that guy breaking into your house?

What's in it for the firemen who risk their lives putting out fires, including those caused by arsonists?

I believe a chunk of my property tax pays for the police and fire department. They are not doing it out of the goodness of his heart. However, if you boil it down to individuals some will go beyond the call of duty.

I do all kinds of "good deeds" without asking what's in it for me. All I want is a thank you, a smile, and the implicit promise that they will do the same for someone else.
Of course, what you put out comes back in fold and I expect no less of my fellow Americans. As I stated above you can't equate charity with a military operation.
