The Soviet-Afghan War, translated by Lester Grau & Michael Gress. It's part of a trilogy, 1. The Bear went over the Mountain 2. Mujahideen Tactics. All taken from the Russian archives. In the 90s, nobody in Russia was either interested nor had the money to publish these archives. So this publisher got the rights.
The Russians too used only about 120,000, with all the advanced technology available.
What I had not known was that there has been an ongoing civil war since 1978 between the central government & the rural areas. The central gov was communist, after a putsch. The Russians actually killed its leader, also used civilians to help the people build & learn, all against the stone wall of being occupiers.
