PTB, please look at history and prove that price drops hurt cpq.

Steve, it's different this time. For the first time in history:

the entry level PC is recognized as being more than adequate for most desktop jobs. The desktop PC is a commodity now;

game consoles are better than most even high-end PC's (ever wondered why SIII with all its award-winning designs is going down?);

WebTV boxes (Sony) are selling for $99 (after a $100 rebate) For another $79, one can buy a wireless keyboard to send e-Mail, etc. This may cut into PC retail sales during the holiday shopping season.

Make it "profit margins", Steve. The real question is whether unit growth can offset the ASP decline. The answer is "no" for the PC industry as a whole. #2 DELL is already showing signs of weakness...
