One of the first difficulties in discussing Peak Oil with those unfamiliar with the subject is their question: "If this such a serious issue, why isn't the government doing something about it or the media discussing it?" At this point your interlocutor starts wondering if you believe in UFOs.

But this in fact is a fascinating question: Why hasn't the mainstream media or others in responsible positions alerted the public to this impending disaster?

Part of the problem is that even within the oil industry, discussion of Peak Oil is verboten. Take the example of Dr. Hirsch who prepared a report on Peak Oil for the Department of Energy. He has worked in the oil industry and in the energy field for many years and yet even he was not aware of Peak Oil until after he left the oil industry.

Needless to say, if industry insiders are unwilling to discuss Peak Oil amongst themselves, the chance it will be discussed outside the industry is virtually non-existent.

Maybe this collective silence is due to a common awareness there is no adequate substitute for Conventional Oil. To discuss Peak Oil would be tantamount to asking people to abandon the pursuit of wealth and upward mobility. How many politicians would get elected running on that position? So, instead we have engaged in collective denial to the point we have increased the stakes to unimaginable proportions.
