Style, I think we should distinguish the quasi-monopolies of CSCO, MSFT and INTC, each of which was built by that company, from a quasi-monopoly created by a merger. The rumored merger of COMS/ASND, the two industry heavy-hitters in RAS, would likely draw more DOJ scrutiny simply because it is easier for the DOJ to derail a proposed merger (check out the Staples debacle) than attack a company that built its own monopoly. For evidence of the latter point, look no further than the DOJ's impotent probes of both INTC and MSFT several years back. I expect the DOJ's current probes of INTC and MSFT will have equally bland results. This just encourages the DOJ to step in at the merger stage. All IMHO, of course.
