those closest to Jesus almost to man turned on him to an extent because they expected a dude with a sword who would banish the Romans.

You are correct that the jews were expecting a worldly Messiah that would at a minimum banish the Romans.

However those closest to Jesus (the disciples) did not turn on him other than Judas. All were martyred except John spreading their faith.
