I like your post but... to be modern is to be what then follows in your statement? I think the idea of what is to be modern... is rather odd, so perhaps it is disagreeing on what the term means in context.

as to swimming... i was taught that if you fall out of the raft and are caught in the downstream current, you get on yer back, with yer feet up, feet facing downstream and go with it... don't need to swim to keep from drowning, bro. or have I carried that allusion too far? :)
