Karl, SPY's sound like the superior vehicle for trading indices compared to mutual funds as far as liquidity goes, but it probably doesn't take too many trades to exceed the mutual fund expenses, if you include bid/ask differentials. What about the new mini S&P futures contracts. With the leverage available in futures, costs can be kept quite low.

Are there other AMEX traded issues that track other indices like technology, small cap, etc.?
