Last night I watched one of those History Channel programs on How the Earth Was Made. This episode was about Iceland. I hope I got the following details accurately.

It talked about how melting ice in the 18th Century unloaded a sort of lid on the volcanoes in Iceland, which then erupted. They released tons of ejecta into the atmosphere, including a great deal of poisonous sulfuric gasses, which went into the atmosphere as sulfuric acid. These gasses precipitated a severe cooling which resulted in thousands of deaths and severe family for several years, and of course the return of ice to the top of the volcanoes.

The program concluded that this cycle may repeat if 'global warming' again melts the ice and of course implied that we should curtail production of greenhouse gasses.

It must take some kind of imperial hubris to believe that humans can control climate. Whether or not our activities cause changes, throwing the entire world's GDP at the problem would not make a hill of beans worth of difference.
