I disagree.. We spent 13 years "talking" to Saddam before we pulled out the "big stick" and knocked him off of his throne.
Saddam was our boy. We gave him the green light to invade Kuwait. We imposed sanctions on Iraq for 11 years. We destroyed all his WMDs way back in the 90s. Knocking him off the throne would have taken a team of special opps, say, 1 year planning and 1 day to execute. No excuse for the invasion.

We've spent over 6 years dealing with Iran's intransigence regarding its nuclear program.

We've been talking with North Korea since 1994 regarding its nuclear ambitions and have received nothing but lies and threats in exchange.

No we do not talk we dictate. Thus, people ignore us. I doubt that we can touch Iran or NK now, it is too late, they made new allies.

And when you do use it, don't worry about the "hand-wringers" and those who would seek to defend the indefensible.
The stick has been use many times uselessly, thus it lost its effectiveness.
