Eric, I was using solar energy at my home and developing, selling and installing commercially viable systems since the 1970's so I know both the potential and the difficulties. The most efficient way to use solar then was to directly utilize it for low grade heat to supplement and substitute for fossil fuel use. That is still true for many commercial enterprises.

It was economic and worked well in the right applications and we got no government subsidy, feed in tariff support or any other handout.

Running a house with the right combination of energy sources and battery storage is certainly possible but expensive even now. However it's no way to run a railroad!

Just as an aside, do you have the confidence to completely and permanently disconnect your system from the local utility suppliers, or do you still have it connected "just in case"?
