"The business of America is business."

-- Calvin Coolidge, 30th President, 1923 - 1929

This statement of Calvin Coolidge is still repeated today. But now we can see with clarity the myopia and fallacy of his quote. Implicitly, Coolidge was saying that people and organizations motivated by profit were and are the best navigators of the country's course. With Peak Oil, we can see how very wrong he is.

It is difficult to ignore the fact the USA with less than 5% of the world's population consumes 25% of the world's oil production. It consumes more oil per capita than other countries in the world.

How did this happen? Is it just happenstance?

To this day, increasing the tax on gasoline is politically unacceptable despite the dire oil situation the country faces. One of the greatest opponents to increasing the gas tax has been Big Oil. By having a political system that caters to corporate interests the USA has been put into a far more difficult position than otherwise would have existed. Would Peak Oil have been avoided entirely? No, simply because it's a finite resource, but the USA's current position would be considerably better. And yet, the wisdom of this practice continues to be unquestioned.
