There is no guarantee that it wouldn't get traction. Grant you, I know it is your fondest dream, but it isn't necessarily based in reality.

Raising taxes does work. Granted, it can be done too much and kill the economy. And, given time, lobbyists can manage to reduce their effectiveness. But that doesn't mean it doesn't work. Taxing the rich can have all kinds of benefits. The taxation of WWII helped fund the growth of the middle class and gave us a great deal of social stability. Which started to unravel as we cut the taxes, created more tax shelters etc. during the 1960s and the 1970s.
