Intel Corp. and Micron Technology Inc. are seeking to regain the lead in the NAND process technology race. During a conference call on Tuesday (Dec. 22), Micron said that it will be ''shortly'' sampling a 2x-nm NAND device.

They keep talking as though getting production at a particular node is everything there is to cost. If that were so, and if IMFT actually was producing everything at 3x well ahead of Sanshiba and Samsung, then they should have gotten more market share than they have so far. There is a lot more to it than that, though. Just because you are producing at a particular node doesn't mean that you are producing efficiently. There are backend processes and producing the right chip for the market that will maximize revenue.

I think they are still blowing smoke over there at IMFT. If conditions were so good in the NAND sector, we would still see massive losses at Micron, whatever node they are producing at.
