Not just that, but there is no absolute requirement to buy auto liability insurance. The requirement only kicks in when you register a vehicle. Its not "a government mandate to have insurance", its a "government requirement to buy insurance in order to register a vehicle".

That fact, and the fact that its a state requirement not a federal one, make it far less constitutionally dubious than the health care insurance requirement.
