Some progressive slots have a positive expected return for the player when the slot jackpot gets really large. Its ok for the casino, since the expected return is negative (house edge is positive) as the jackpot builds up, and then they only pay out one big jackpot before everything starts over again. (And of course your chance of winning that jackpot is very small, and usually the positive expected return is rather small as well.)
