...spoke to a few busy orthopods who say the knee-injection mkt is very big...these guys do at least 20-30/wk with steroids which are short term and not particularly satisfying...injection takes less than a minute...if MD is paid per injection and possibly for visit(s), it provides a good incentive, and with managed care/medicare a good alternative to surgery....I see a big point being the following --- since sales will be done directly to MD, does he have to expend/risk capital for inventory, or will payor have a relationship which bypasses that need? this could be a big point, especially at $500 a pop!!!t.... I was also told by a rheumatologist that as recently as 2 months ago the Am coll of Rheum ( unconfirmed, just what he said) stated that synvisc was no better than tylenol as an analgesicl...since the college's convention is I believe next weekend, that should be clarified...combination of a big market, an apparently effective product with little major competition, and a great sales force in Wyeth Arest makes this very compelling...
