Sprint Plotting WiMax Phone at CES?
DECEMBER 23, 2009 | Dan Jones | Post a comment
unstrung.com;

5:25 PM -- Could Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) be readying its first WiMax smartphone for a debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in early January?

Our colleague, Eric Zeman, over at InformationWeek is suggesting that this could indeed be the case. He cites invites from Sprint to an event on January 6, which Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT)'s Steve Ballmer will be speaking at, and a further invite from Sprint and LG Electronics Inc. (London: LGLD; Korea: 6657.KS) on the next day -- hosted by the redoubtable Brooke Shields -- as indications that something big is going on.

He suggests:

All of this thrown in together points at just one likely conclusion: Sprint is going to launch its first WiMax-enabled smartphone. Not only will the device have WiMax, but it will run Windows Mobile and it will be made by LG. Such a device would be quite big news for all three companies involved.

Sprint has previously said that it will launch a phone that supports 3G CDMA, WiMax, and WiFi in 2010. (See Sprint to Extend '4G' in Clearwire Markets.)
