RAID = Redundant Array of Independent Disks; the same information is written to multiple platters. Not only does this provide measures of safety for continuous (24 hr/7 days a week) operation, but during peak access times if more than one request is made for information from the same file at the same time, the information can be retrieved for more than one request simultaneously. Thus RAID systems are not only safer but faster as well (and more expensive of course).
