but not a single admission that the bill will ration

Huh? Of course it will ration. Medicare and Medicaid ration. Private insurance rations. Everyone knows that. They sing the praises of the Board whose job it is is to propose rationing as a means of saving money. Maybe they don't fling that word around liberally but the concept is clearly advocated, seems to me.

I can't believe that any rational person would believe that is is right to enact this bill without a thorough discussion of these provisions and how they will be implemented.

I agree with that, but I also submit that no rational person would believe that rationing won't be used.

Do you really think that people would be able to afford alternative treatment in addition to paying exhorbitant insurance premiums.

Some people will pay up, get some charity to pay up, or get the medical system to eat the costs. Some people won't be able to afford alternative treatment, won't be able to find anyone to subsidize them, or will decide to do without rather than pay even if they can afford it. I insist that "death panel" is too strong an image for that and entirely non-constructive. The Board members aren't going to be running around putting black tags on designated people's toes, which is what the label suggests.

Right now Medicare doesn't pay for lots of things and people may die. Same with the VA, SCHIP, and Medicaid. It's always been that way. Why has no one been using "death panel" to describe the folks who decide what they pay or don't pay? How is that different?
