Back in 1980, Brazil was heavily dependent on foreign oil. The country was told there was no way to get around it. Brazil didn't like that answer. Eventually Brazil became energy independent. Why didn't our leaders have the same vision as the Brazilian leaders?

You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. As usual.

Brazil become energy independent how? Offshore drilling which led to discoveries of massive oilfields, which continues to provide 80% of Brazil's vehicle fuel.

Why is it that you accuse other people of not having a clue when its you that is the one without a clue? In fact, Brazil became energy independent primarily because it developed its ethanol industry and encouraged the development of cars that run on both types of fuel. Why don't you learn to read up on a subject before you open your mouth and insert foot:

washingtonpost.com

After the shortages of the 80s which created huge problems for Brazil, they figured out that they could not use Ethanol as a primary source of supply. In Brazil ethanol supplies about 20% of the fuel for vehicles.

Actually its 40% which has a huge impact on oil demand.

The United States requires nearly 10x the fuel Brazil does.

So? We are a much bigger nation with many more cars. It stands to reason we would need more ethanol production.

Why do you balk at anything that is progressive?
