According to investigators, the bomb on Northwest flight 253, which was en route from Amsterdam to Detroit when suspect Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab allegedly detonated it, contained more than 80 grams of PETN. The material was allegedly sewn into Abdulmutallab's underwear, and was not detected by airport security.

That is a very powerful high explosive. A tiny bit of it provides the main charge in many blasting caps. It is also the explosive used in detonating cord.
It is rated the most unstable and most easily detonated of the explosives our military uses. Properly applied, heat is sufficient to cause a detonation.
Our enemies are serious. We need to get serious with them.
