Hm?...a narrow outlook?
I understand his logic but it seems to me that while 'net energy use' is important here..but within a much broader context
ie: greater efficiencies/achieving the same or more with less; 1....getting ahead of the energy time span in formation of usable energy.... using the energy of the sun directly in all its forms (solar, wind, wave action, water flow/gravity, algae growth and a lot more to come) rather then waiting tens of thousand of years for vegetation to decay and drilling down ever deeper to recover it is a huge efficiency..
2.life style changes...becoming a home centered culture once again (a New medieval society) where living includes work learning, recreation and culture centered largely in one place (with out the huge need/expenditure for needless transportation but with the more efficient electronic communication).

3. and within a Culture of Voluntary simplicity, enrichening everyone's human existence
