Maybe the spectacular results of jet fuel fires on 9/11 has made al Qaeda over-enthusiastic about the possibilities. It's rare that any of these fanatics is a good engineer - that's why the bomb-makers are always a weak point in the chain.

It's good to know that an explosion wouldn't necessarily bring down a plane. I thought that once the structure was compromised, the plane would probably rip apart or become uncontrollable.

update: remember that the bomber waited until the plane was entering its descent.
