Richard, just from what you've discovered today it is clear that PRLN was not "blindly" screening thousands of herbs for anti-HIV activity, but was guided by the earlier 1988 study. I'd be willing to bet that the "other compounds with anti-HIV activity" that PRLN just reported in its news conference were derived from the other herbs mentioned in the article. Oh well, even if PRLN's work isn't original, it could still be valid. But only if in vitro activity translates into in vivo effectiveness. I was also impressed by the fact that Bastyn university constitutes exactly the type of "community clinic" to which the article referred. It may not be a "standard" medical school, but nonetheless does have access to patients with HIV/AIDS who are willing to try alternative approaches. However, the dramatic effectiveness of the new combined therapies for HIV/AIDS may make it very hard for other potential treatments such as PN355 to be tested in this country. Reason, once the effectiveness of the triple therapy became known, ALL those with AIDS were probably switched over to this effective regime. In fact, this might be the reason why PRLN cannot report the results of their Phase 1 study started in March at Bastyr--their patients were switched over to the new regime before the study with PN355 could be completed. In this case, further research may have to be moved offshore to areas of the world which cannot finance $20,000 per year per patient.
