Seniority gets you the best jobs no matter what you look like or how old / ugly / miserable you are. My favorite trick ... I book a cheap fair and then plead with the gate staff (NOT at the check in counter) for an upgrade. I usually get it as I am a frequent flyer (them cards work) either for free or maybe some small upgrade charge. Failing that there is still the Purser ... And yes, Singapore Airline is great but so is Quantas and Swiss Air. Lufthansa on long haul flights in business class is also quite good. I try to avoid US / CAN airlines whenever I can except for short hauls. All kinds of little tricks frequent flyers know or should know. The once every so often flyer gets exactly what he pays for.
