anyone who thinks an explosion like this on a plane isn't going to do significant damage is nuts:

Blowing up a #10 can like that is a standard military demolition demonstration.
A single blasting cap inside an upside down #10 can does almost the same thing.

But if you lay a couple of sandbags on the can, the result is muted to say the least. Lay a body on it and a small charge will be stifled.

I agree it could be devastating if you were sitting next to the perp when and if the explosion occurs. That is why I think he was a suicide bomber. The bomber's own death and some collateral damage and other possible bystander deaths is the most damage a skilled demo man would foresee.
