According to Worldwatch Institute, solar cell productions volumes are increasing about 20% per year and costs are being reduced about 15% per year. Most high power solar cells are now single crystal or polycrystaline. There is also a lot of work being done on amorphous solar cells. This offers the greatest promise of major reductions in solar cell costs. Current projections are that it will probably take about 15 years for solar cells to be cost competitive with other forms of generation for grid-connected electricity.

For remote power and for many areas that aren't already connected to an electric grid, especially in the third world solar cells are already cost competitive.
