Maxwell,

Re: "I talked to an AMD engineer who has dissected the PII chip ..."

Very good information, Maxwell ... you have a very good contact there
at AMD. Yes, Intel does use Nitride spacers ... but, I am very surprised
that AMD does not. You see, Nitride spacers give better Hot
Carrier Injection (HCI) resistance and better control of Short Channel
Effects (SCE). This could be one reason the FET's at AMD are lower
performing.

Also I can tell that you have real info here because Intel does etch
their contact very hard and they tend to form "anchors" with the tungsten
plugs "seated" well down into the Aluminum (through the Ti/TiN layer).
This does give very good low resistance contacts and the overetch insures
that the contact yield is high. I don't expect this to play a significant
role in performance. BTW, does your friend see any difference in the
physical gate length. I would expect this to be shorter on the PII
material (as compared to AMD).

Good to hear from you, Maxwell.

Make It So,
Yousef
