I'd bet if we looked at who owns machine guns, more often than not, we'd find those owners have some kind of criminal past or present.

Perhaps you should take a look - now you're just projecting complete BS. A criminal record would stop non-machine gun purchases and machine guns have a higher bar for 'legal' ownership - not to mention incredibly high prices.
