That's the 3. way you forgot, Ted.
Those sniffers, however, are only used at random, or if somebody or his belongings somehow look suspicious - or if he has been profiled.
Are you sure? The stuff this guy had on him was PETN, a rare explosive. They said only the full body scanner would have caught it for sure:
"And the colourless crystals of the substance, PETN or pentaerythritol trinitrate, are hard to detect if carried in a sealed container."
AND
"Michels said that even more advanced security measures, such as machines that "sniff" passengers for explosives or analyse swabs of their clothes and belongings, might not have spotted the device."

I'm sure most of you guys have had (some of) your hand luggage 'sniffed' for nitro vapors.
This guy didn't because he wasn't profiled, nor was he on a suspects list. Right?
As for the shoes off policy, that is - or at least was - not enforced in European airports.
It was reported last nite that the Nigerian showed up with some rich guy at the Amsterdam airport and did not have a passport. If true, and the rich guy was able to finagle a seat by whatever means, it wouldn't matter if he was on a list and it suggests the Dutch need to re evaluate their security measures. They need to do it in any case. From the American embassy in Nigeria to the Nigerians to the Dutch, I think people have gotten way to lapse. |
