Over the weekend, we viewed old photo slides of Christmases from 30 & 40 years past. The oldsters in the room, those mid-60's and over, got all misty-eyed. They pointed to the mountains of presents under the trees in the photos as evidence that Christmas used to mean so much more.

Man, I'd forgotten how much loot we used to give/get. I come from a smallish family and the kids would each get 10-20 presents of varying sizes. The greatest shopping burden fell on the parents. Every year they'd sputter, "This is it! Next year we're cutting way back."

Never happened until I went off to college.

Can you imagine shopping for, purchasing and wrapping 10(+) gifts each for a couple kids plus another couple each for your spouse and dozen or so extended family members? I get a materialistic hangover just having to re-visit that period through photos. It's no wonder X-mas has changed. People are like foie grois. Not only do they not need any more, they can't TAKE any more.

I don't know too many people who explicitly equate X-mas with Jesus anymore, either. I think the holiday has been pushed so far over the top by marketers that it might be mutilated beyond redemption. Finally.... <G?>
