There are so many poor in relative terms, by that measure their always will be poor. In absolute terms then (considering the size of our country) there isn't a lot of severe poverty in the US.

Your argument specifically about "so many poor" doesn't make sense for that reason, and because in our previous wars, except for the really small ones, we where spending a larger percentage of our wealth, in a country where the economic well being of those at the bottom was worse than it is now.

If your concerned about the poor why make their transportation more expensive by having the "cash for clunkers" program destroy serviceable used cars? Why force them to buy insurance even if they are young and health and have no dependents? Why force their food prices up with government farm price supports? Why make it harder for them to get jobs by harming the economy through raising taxes for businesses, skilled workers, and investors, and by "living wage" laws and such?
