But unlike wood, Mega Purple was never in wine in the old days, whereas wood has been used for centuries.

Mega Purple is a concentrate made from grapes, so I'm not sure that you can make the claim that you're dealing with something that was never in wine in the old days.

In any event I'm no expert, but it seems to me that if you're putting oak "tea bags" in the wine, you're going to get a clumsy, extracted oak flavor no matter how you go about it. I believe there are better alternatives, one of them being to just let the fruit speak for itself.
