Here's my semi-annual exercise to see if I remember why I own the stocks I own, and so I can check back and see if their stories have changed. I post in case it helps others too.

American Superconductor
AMSC (market cap $1.91B)
American Superconductor continues to surprise, even in terms of whether it is a speculation or an investment. Basically, the company is an old startup that is speculative because it has yet to launch its prime product, which is superconducting cables for power transmission. Despite that, the company is generating significant revenues based on power regulation hardware and wind turbine technology. They are also initiating significant ventures in power grid connectivity, particularly the project that will connect the three main US power grids.

The company is well-positioned to benefit from the basic need to use power more efficiently with fewer interruptions in service, and easier upgrades to dense urban networks.

I am holding the stock, and am pleased to see that it has become a darling of the investment community. It appears that the mainstream investors are treating the company's Chinese contracts credibly, and recognize that by investing in electrical grid infrastructure investors can benefit from the alternative energy industry without having to guess on which new source of power will prevail.

It would have been nice to have kept my first shares, but I invest to pay the bills, so those shares went to good use. I hope to hold the remaining shares for years as the company hits its main stride with the broad release, acceptance and production of superconducting cables. I also doubt that I will buy more because the stock has risen substantially.

DISCLOSURE LTBH since 2003 but the first shares were sold a while back.
