Gingrich had done a 180 — within 140 characters.

With all respect, Newt has it in him. When Lithuania became the first of the Soviet "republics" to proclaim independence, older Bush - for some strategic reasons of having to kiss up to Gorby - refused to recognise them. Newt made a big stink, and went to see Bush with the intent of changing his mind. They had a rather brief chat, and the one who came out 180 degrees converted was... Newt. Remember writing him a letter back then, criticizing his wishy-washiness. He never replied.
